"Building on the Past for the Future"

Since 1874, De Soto has primarily been a railroad town.  Many hardworking men and women have contributed to the success of various railroads through the years and to the growth of the community.  Consequently, "DeSoto Railroad Employees' Memorial, Inc.," a not-for profit corporation, was formed to erect a lasting memorial to these workers.

A site was obtained for the memorial from Union Pacific Railroad, through the City of DeSoto on Fountain City Road, at the north-end crossing.  Histories of the three railroads, for which our community has provided a home, have been incorporated into the memorial. The memorial includes a plaza of red bricks and gray granite blocks, as well as polished gray granite benches, in a park-like setting.    Three black granite monoliths stand in the background depicting generations of railroad workers.

Families and friends of past and present workers have an opportunity to purchase a personalized worker's brick to honor a worker.  Engraved 4" x 8" worker's bricks are available for only $50 each.  They are placed in the red brick plaza of the memorial and are a meaningful way to honor a loved one who worked for the U. P., Mo. Pac. Or St. Louis Iron Mountain & Southern.

Business, individuals or organizations wishing to make larger impact may also secure trees, engraved granite blocks or benches. Trees are $75.00 - $135.00 (with engraved plaque), 12x12 engraved blocks are $500.00, 16x16 engraved granite blocks are $750.00 and benches are $1000.00. The committee's goal is an engraved brick for every worker.

Anyone wishing to honor a worker other than a friend or family, may do so by adopting a worker.  Please click here to contact a board member for available names.
